If you are going to buy a used car, knowing its label helps you anticipate possible traffic restrictions in some cities and choose with more confidence.

What is the environmental label

It is a badge the DGT (Spain’s traffic authority) assigns to each vehicle according to its engine type and emissions level. There are four labels (0, ECO, C and B) and the most polluting vehicles get none. Displaying it on the windscreen is voluntary, but town councils can limit access to certain areas according to the label.

Label 0 (blue)

It applies to zero-emission vehicles: battery electric, extended-range electric, plug-in hybrids with a minimum electric range of 40 km, and fuel-cell vehicles.

ECO label (blue and green)

It includes plug-in hybrids with less than 40 km of electric range, non-plug-in hybrids and gas-powered vehicles, such as those running on natural gas or LPG.

Label C (green)

It applies to combustion cars that meet the latest emissions standards. As a guide, petrol cars registered from January 2006 and diesel cars registered from 2014.

Label B (yellow)

It is given to combustion vehicles that meet earlier emissions standards. As a guide, petrol cars registered since January 2001 and diesel cars registered since 2006.

Vehicles with no label

These are, in general, the oldest: petrol cars from before 2001 and diesel cars from before 2006. You may not be able to drive in some restricted zones.

How to find a car’s label

You can check any vehicle’s label, free of charge, by entering its plate number on the DGT website. It can also be checked through the miDGT app or by calling 060. Before buying, check the label of the car you are interested in instead of relying only on its registration year.

Why it matters when buying a used car

The label affects the advantages or restrictions applied by the towns you travel through, and it can affect resale value in the future. Check the local rules for your usual area and the cities you visit often.

Label and engine type

If you are torn between fuels, read our guide to diesel, petrol or hybrid. And before deciding, go through the inspection checklist for any used car.

Looking for a used car in Mijas or Fuengirola?

At Autos Reina, at Camino Viejo de Coín, 28 (Mijas Costa), you will find second-hand cars with a 1-year warranty and the chance to test drive them with no obligation.
