When looking for a used car, one of the first questions is the engine. There is no single answer: it depends on how much you drive, where, how much you want to spend on fuel and maintenance, and the restrictions in your area. These general guidelines will help you decide.

Start with your real use

Before looking at engines, make a realistic estimate of the kilometres you drive per year and the type of journey. Commuting through a city every day is not the same as taking long motorway trips several weekends a month. Also think about how many years you plan to keep the car, since that affects how much it is worth paying extra for a particular engine.

Petrol

It usually suits mixed or urban use and moderate annual mileage. Modern petrol engines are efficient and maintenance is generally straightforward. It is a sensible option if you make short trips, do few kilometres a year or want a lower purchase price.

Diesel

It has traditionally paid off for people who cover a lot of kilometres on open roads, thanks to low consumption at steady speed. For short, frequent trips it is usually not the best choice, since these engines work best when they warm up properly. If you are interested in a used diesel, pay special attention to its maintenance history and its environmental label.

Non-plug-in hybrid

It combines a combustion engine with a supporting electric motor that recharges while you drive. It performs well in town and in mixed use, and you do not need to install a charging point. Hybrids carry the DGT’s ECO label, which can be useful if you live or work in towns with restrictions.

Plug-in hybrid

It lets you cover part of your journeys in electric mode if you charge the battery. It makes a lot of sense if you can charge easily at home or at work and your daily trips are short. If you do not charge regularly, you lose much of its advantage. Always ask about the battery’s condition on a used car.

Electric

It can be a good choice if you have a charging point and predictable journeys. On a used car, battery condition is key: ask for information about its health and real range.

Don’t forget the environmental label

The DGT label affects traffic restrictions in some cities. See what each label means and check the rules of the towns you travel through. You can check any car’s label with its plate number on the DGT website.

Maintenance and condition

Beyond the type of engine, the specific condition of the car matters a lot: maintenance history, real mileage and a prior inspection. A well-kept car, whether diesel, petrol or hybrid, will serve you better than a neglected one. Go through our 10-point checklist before you decide.

How to decide

Make a list of your annual kilometres, your total budget (purchase, insurance, fuel and maintenance) and your charging options. Then test drive several cars: how they feel at the wheel also counts. Local rules and incentives change over time, so always confirm the current information before deciding.
