What to check before buying a used car: a 10-point checklist

Buying a used car is a good way to save money, but an attractive price is worthless if the car hides problems. Before you pay, it is worth taking a little time to inspect it carefully. This 10-point checklist works whether you buy from a private seller or from a dealership, and you can keep it on your phone when you go to see the car.

1. Vehicle paperwork

Start with the documents. Check that the registration certificate (permiso de circulación) and the technical data sheet match the car in front of you: plate, chassis number and specifications. The owner must be the person selling it to you, and the ITV (Spain’s roadworthiness inspection) must be valid. Also ask whether the car has any charges, seizures or retention of title, as these could stop you from putting it in your name. A dealership should be able to clarify this without any problem.

2. Service book and invoices

A stamped service history and workshop invoices show that the car has been looked after. Check that oil, filter and timing belt changes (if the engine has one) were done at the manufacturer’s intervals. If there is no proof of maintenance, be cautious or negotiate the price down.

3. Consistent mileage

Compare the mileage on the dashboard with the wear on the steering wheel, gear lever, pedals and driver’s seat. A car with low mileage but a lot of interior wear deserves an explanation. Invoices and previous ITV reports usually record the mileage at each date and help you confirm the figure is consistent.

4. Bodywork and paint

Inspect the car in natural light from a metre or two away. Look for differences in shade between panels, uneven gaps between doors, bonnet and wings, and paint overspray on rubber seals or plastics. These can point to a poorly repaired collision. Check the underside and any rust around wheel arches and sills too.

5. Tyres

Check the tread depth and that all four tyres wear evenly. Uneven wear can point to alignment, damper or suspension problems. Also check the manufacturing date on the sidewall: very old tyres will need replacing even if they still have tread.

6. Cold start

Ask that the engine is not warmed up before you arrive and start it from cold. Listen for strange noises, watch for abnormal exhaust smoke and check for oil or coolant leaks under the car. Look at the oil level and appearance; it should not look milky.

7. Interior and electronics

Test the electric windows, central locking, lights, indicators, wipers, screen, cameras and parking sensors. On the Costa del Sol, where air conditioning is used almost all year round, check that it cools well and makes no odd noises. Also inspect the upholstery and look for damp or bad smells.

8. Dashboard warning lights

When you turn the key, all warning lights should come on briefly and go out once the engine starts. If one stays on, or one never lights up, ask why. An ignored warning light can hide an expensive repair.

9. Test drive

Drive the car on different kinds of road: city, open road and, if possible, a hill. Pay attention to the steering, brakes, clutch, gearbox and vibrations. Check that the car goes straight with a loose wheel and does not pull to one side under braking. If the seller will not let you test drive it, that is a bad sign.

10. Warranty and terms of sale

Ask what warranty is included and exactly what it covers, and get everything in writing. A professional seller must give you a warranty; with private sellers the situation is different. We explain it in our article on the warranty on a used car. Also ask about the ownership transfer paperwork.

A final tip

If in doubt, have a mechanic you trust inspect the car before you close the deal. A prior inspection costs little compared with a major breakdown. And do not rush: a good seller will understand that you take your time.
