Tabla de Contenidos

When you buy a used car, the vehicle must be registered in your name with the DGT. It is a simple procedure if you have your paperwork in order. We explain the documents, steps and deadlines. The figures are for 2026 and may change, so confirm them with the DGT, the Junta de Andalucía or an agent (gestor) before you file.

Usual documents

  • Valid ID (DNI or NIE) of the seller and the buyer.
  • The vehicle’s registration certificate (permiso de circulación).
  • Technical data sheet (ITV card), if applicable.
  • Proof of payment of the latest road tax.
  • Sales contract signed by both parties.
  • Proof of payment of the transfer tax and of the DGT fee.
  • If there are charges or retention of title, the cancellation certificate.

The sales contract

It is a free-form document. It must include the details of the seller and buyer, those of the vehicle (make, model, plate and chassis number), the price, the date and place, and bear the signatures of both parties. Keep a copy: it is proof of the date of purchase.

Steps

  1. Sign the sales contract.
  2. Pay the Transfer Tax (ITP) using form 621. In Andalucía the general rate is 4%, rising to 8% for cars over 15 fiscal horsepower. It is calculated on the vehicle’s fiscal value if that is higher than the contract price.
  3. File the transfer with the DGT and pay the fee, which in 2026 is €55.70 for cars.
  4. Receive the registration certificate in your name. While the final one arrives, the receipt allows you to drive.

Deadlines

The buyer has 30 days from signing the contract to apply for the ownership transfer with the DGT. The deadline to file form 621 is 2 months. The seller can file a notice of sale with the DGT to stop being listed as responsible for the vehicle.

What if the ITV has expired?

The ownership transfer can be processed, but you will need a valid ITV to drive. Check its date before you buy.

Do it yourself or use a gestor?

You can do it yourself, online or in person, or hand it to an agent (gestoría). A gestor charges for the service, but saves you time and mistakes in the paperwork.

If you buy from a dealership

Always ask who handles the procedure, what the price includes and how long it will take for the registration certificate to arrive in your name. At Autos Reina you can ask us how it works before you decide. And before buying, go through our inspection checklist and the information on the warranty.
