Insurance for a used car: third party or fully comprehensive

Tabla de Contenidos

Before you drive your used car away you need valid insurance: the law requires at least third-party liability cover. Beyond that minimum, the best option depends on the age of the car, its value and how much you will use it.

Basic third-party insurance

It is the compulsory minimum. It covers damage you cause to other people and vehicles, but not damage to your own car. It can suit very old or low-value cars.

Third party extended

It adds cover on top of the minimum, which depending on the policy may include theft, fire, glass, roadside assistance or legal defence. The specific cover varies a lot between insurers, so read the conditions.

Fully comprehensive, with or without excess

It also covers damage to your own car, even if you are at fault. Comprehensive cover with an excess usually has a lower premium, but in the event of a claim you pay a fixed amount. For a relatively recent or high-value car it is usually the most complete option.

What to consider when choosing

  • The value of the car: if a repair can cost more than is reasonable, consider more cover.
  • Use: driving to work every day is not the same as occasional use.
  • Where it is parked: in a garage or on the street.
  • Your record as a driver.
  • Roadside assistance and a replacement car.

How to compare policies

Ask for several quotes with the same cover so you can compare them. Look at the excess, the exclusions, the value paid in the event of a total loss and the services included. Do not choose on price alone.

When to take out the insurance

Do it before you collect the car: you cannot drive without valid insurance. To take it out, the insurer usually asks for your driving licence, ID document and the vehicle’s details, such as the plate number.

Also keep in mind

If you are a foreign resident, see our guide to buying a car as a foreigner. And before buying, go through the inspection checklist and the paperwork for the ownership transfer.
